There was a lot wrong with the previous format; there is a lot wrong with the present format.

1) News in Brief - have spaces for pictures, but no pictures. That does not work.
2) Todays's FP photo not good enough, too pixelated. Use a different image.
3) Far to much space around news in brief articles below FP
4) Previous FP list should be at least as long as the sidebar
5) Hideous 'You might also like.." ads WILL be mistaken for NB stories. And there are no fewer than 9 of them if you click through to a FP story. Mad.

It's an invitation to collaborate on a post. I don't think the "explanation" sub-clause is very explicatory. It should read something like "please add and/or amend at will"
