Sources close to the palace reveal that the Grande Dame of British Theatre, Dame Judi Dench, is being strongly tipped to take on the vacant role of Queen Mother. "Her regal presence and enthusiasm for horse racing combined with the great affection in which she is held by the public make her a strong candidate," said an unnamed spokesperson, believed to be Dame Judi's agent. The nation's favourite grandmother gave a tactful hint of her willingness to accept the role should it be offered by performing Sondheim's "Bring on the Crown" at the Promenade Concert on 31st July. Giggles from the audience during the performance were understood to having nothing to do with her inability to sing. "They were recalling with delight Dame Judi's performance as "M" in the television series Cranford," explained the same spokesperson.
