When Elaine Cartwright described her cats as her 'babies', she didn't realise that the NHS had listed Fluffy, Smudge, Kittykins, BooBoo, Yogi, Blackie and Tiddles as her biological offspring or that their feline influenza shots were accompanied by the controversial MMR jab.
"It was bad enough when the local council sent inspectors around to ask why I'd not sent them to school," Ms Cartwright explains. "They refused to accept that my babies have whiskers, pointed ears and tails, and instead told me to get it checked with my local GP. I finally had to tell them that I homeschool them...teaching them to colour in a map was easier than I thought thankfully."
Now though, the local authority has sent her letters to inform her that Smudge, BooBoo and Yogi are overweight and that they are at increased risk of cancer, heart attacks and so on.
"It's ridiculous," Hilary Wentworth of the Not So Royal But Good Enough Anyway Society for Animals [NSRBGEASA] has stated. "Elaine has already demonstrated to me that her cats' lifestyle is sufficient. They climb trees, they eat mice and birds, they climb roofs to yowl and wake up all the neighbours every night, they crap in their neighbours' sandpits and get chased with waterpistols for it. How much more exercise could they take? Cross trainer?"
All cats have refused to comment.
