   An interesting concept.

   This was an accusation directed at Geert Wilders by one of his critics, during the controversy surrounding the recent failure to broadcast anti-Islamic cartoons as part of a political broadcast he planned to make.

   I believe that the critic who accused him of "Using the truth as a weapon" was speaking on behalf of a Muslim group, but I cannot trace who this critic was. However I am intrigued by the idea that "Using the truth as a weapon" is something for which anyone should be condemned.

   You'd have to be more specific about the context. But given that the last time I saw him on anything Geert Wilders was saying that all Muslims were paedophiles, I'm not entirely sure that truth is the weapon he should be best associated with. I tend to think the Islamists and Wilders deserve each other, they're both odious.

   The context was exactly what I said - it related to the controversy over the recent failure to broadcast some cartoons.

   The accusation from one of Wilders' critics that Wilders was "using the truth as a weapon" was quoted during a report on the controversy on BBC Radio Four around mid-day on Sunday. Much to my frustration, I failed to note who was being quoted.

   I offer no opinion or comment about Wilders or his actions, but I regarded this as an intriguing thing to be accused of.

   Just because someone opposing Wilders says something that is questionable doesn't automatically make Wilders right by default. Or put another way, two idiots arguing doesn't mean the winner of the argument is right.

   Can't find any reference this quote in relation to Wilders - in fact Titus' thread comes top of the Google hits, so I think it's something he wants to believe, rather than being something that actually happened. Oops, there I go again using truth as a weapon.

    I don't know or care whether Wilders is right or wrong. I don't know whether this particular opponent of his was right or wrong. But I was fascinated to hear the quoted phrase being used apparently as an explicit criticism. (Not a case of "wanting" to hear anything!)

    I have since learned that this phrase is not original, but has previously been used by others, in completely different contexts, apparently ironically or as a back-handed compliment rather than, as it seems in this recent case, explicitly as a criicism.
