Can anyone claim ownership of their comedy writings, (or 'comedy' writings in my case)? Once it's out there we lose all control over it. See Red's Capello pic that went viral last week for example. I bet Red got no credit in any of the emails. But we all knew.

Doesn't it just reflect badly on the person nicking the material? After all, someone will have heard the joke before, then the cat's out of the bag, and you're sussed, and made to look like a right Chegwin.

Funny story about your biscuits being eaten by a stranger on a train, from Douglas Adams' So Long and Thanks for all the Fish, remember it? Published 1984, but Adams insisted it actually happened to him in the 70s.

Same story turns up in Jeffrey Archer's A Quiver Full of Arrows, but with fags. Also in a number of films - The Lunch Date, Dus Kahaniyaan, Boeuf Bourgignon. This year, the story was comprehensively dissected in Ian McEwan's novel Solar.

Can anyone actually 'own' the unwitting thief story?

My friend's friend's gave a lift to a woman, who turned out to be a man, but luckily she tricked him into getting out the car and drove off.
When she looked into the cross dresser's handbag, there was an Axe.

I swear that happened to my friend.

But I heard someone trying to pass it off as their story.

When I'm writing material for my stand up act I am always paranoid that maybe the funny thought I've just had is actually a repressed memory of someone elses joke.

I've even dropped stuff from my set because another comedian has used something similar on a panel show even though I know that I wrote the gag about 6 months before I heard them say it.

Intellectual property law does not protect jokes. Keith Chegwin is a joke.
Could comedians seek legal recompense should Cheggers plagiarise.

It's 16yrs+ since I did a module in Intellectual property law, but I think this particular issue would fall under the Trades Description Act.

I accidently stole £33 million in gold bullion from Heathrow once. How can that be a crime? I meant to give it back but, you know, I was busy and the longer I left it the more awkward it felt to actually go back there and hand it in. Luckily the police caught someone else, so I felt much better about it.

That's just wrong. And what is the point of Keith Chegwin anyway? His career is too closely linked to that of Noel Edmunds for him not to be very sinister indeed.
