Hello mr hack and ram, always ready to scoff! Ha!
I never met the sultan. He was at the top table and i was one of the minions. I met one of his wives, though, but we did not have a lot in common or much to talk about. The sultan is a short, shy-looking man, whom I admire. He is a benign dictator and has done a lot for his sultanate. It has to be said, though, that Brunei might qualify for one of the most boring places on earth. Sorry.
Here is one i bet you both forgot;

It wasn't a scoff Plucks, it's my version of a guffaw. It's something I used to do in masonic meetings when serious stuff was said which I found amusing. I wasn't kicked out of the masons, and some of them liked my sense of humour. I got bored with it, though thoroughly recommend membership as a way of getting over a fear of public speaking.
I've a brother in law who was a DJ on Radio Brunei, a nice chap, but no Alan Freeman.Posted 3 years ago # -
a guffaw is always good, ram. good word too. you can get a couple of london radio stations, in brunei. i don't know why.

Ram - you still wearing those cheese cloth shirts and Loon-pants - there are times I swear you are 'growing your own' - no wonder the snow didn't settle on your roof this winter.
I found it hard to believe Plucky was 'like that' with the Sultan but now you are claiming to have a close family member advising him on important political decisions affecting the sultanate (A side or B side of Hey Jude)
Next we find Malgor watches TV in a Darth Vader outfit and Scroat is a former high wire mime artistPosted 3 years ago # -
I'm working again, but just popped in for a roll-up.
You jest Mr Hack, but one of the first things you learn (after making the Editor's tea) is how f*cking weird allegedly 'ordinary' people are.
Wish I hadn't written than now. Wouldn't mind some Old Holborn now.

wot you on about, mr hack? i ain't got no fambly member advisin' the sultan. I did slip a disk in brunei, though. hope you are well.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Edward, you bastard, you promised me you'd never reveal that to anyone and now you've only gone and published it on the entire interweb. One more revelation and I'll disconnect the basement webcam altogether.

Did I mention that we'd be staying next door to the Falcon at Arncliffe for a week in August?

Eddy, if M&S did expandable waist loons I'd probably be fool enough to wear them. Scroaty, great choice. I'm from Swaledale but upper Wharfedale is much better. The walking round Kettlewell, Grassington and Malham is superb and the pubs do have quite good food, as well as beer. Not all of them , obviously. Don't eat in Malham or Buckden.

Ram, is there a weekly market in Grassington? I have a weird, not to mention 30 odd yr old memory of being at this bizarre combination of traditional farmers market and "dodgy" Del-boy style market, where you could buy everything from pots and pans to knock-off designer stuff.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'm not sure about weekly, Jen, it seems like every time I go there. I like Grassington a lot but it's a bit touristy. It has a small market triangle which takes every opportunity to promote itself. Every time I go past there is a craft fair going on and it drags in Gardeners Question Time and the like. It's also the area of the Original Calendar Girls, which is perhaps something you, Sauce and Stunts should be thinking of for NB2011. The photographer might not be up for doing Mary E at the mo, but what the hell.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Thanks Ram, so it wasn't just an amalgamated collection of memories then. Phew!
I'm sure that the other NBettes would make fantastic Calendar Girls, and Maz could do a Demi Moore style tasteful bump shot, but I would be best suited to modelling the NB Body-Bag these days.Posted 3 years ago # -
Actually, a shot of Maz, with the NB logo body-painted onto the bump could be a real winner, along with a NB Maternity Range, NB Condoms (ribbed ticklers, obviously), and NB screen wipes and screen protectors.

Sorry Jeni, I know you're trying to "big up" your pal, but she's probably big enough and a bit anyway. She's not a bad looking lass an' all but I don't think a picture of her as Miss May, rather than as a definite no doubt about it, with an ad for how to stop that sort of thing happening again would be a seller. If I don't think it would work you should be on to a winner.

Mr. Hack. Thanks for that. Excellent stuff.
BTW there's a fight over on the thread about healthcare. Dreadful noise.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Don't worry Scroaty, only my occasional shout at Rikkor, off to bed now anyway. nite Reich.

Ram, it seems the elasticated loon pants idea might have legs.
I ran past the Dragon's Den with it and they seemed pretty keen to have a slice of the action.
