David Cameron today rejected claims that he was ‘chickening out’ of doing TV debates in the run-up to the general election, insisting that he couldn’t take part in debates as he had to wash his hair that night.
“All three nights, actually. Or however many debates they were planning to do”, he told a press conference at a factory where he was getting in touch with ordinary people. “I’ve just got a lot going on at the moment, and I need some time to myself as well for things like washing my hair.”
“Everything’s just really hectic right now. I’ve got a ton of paperwork that needs doing, and I’ve got to go to the European Council meeting in late March. And there’s this general election in May, and I need to start preparing for that”, he continued. “Look, I’m just a bit edgy at the moment, alright? I just need some space and time to myself. Can you just back off for a minute?”
But Labour leader Ed Miliband slammed Cameron’s “excuses”, saying “I’m happy to debate him any time, any place, anywhere, anyhow, anyway, any place and in any vicinity. I’ve been asking him for a debate for months and each time he makes an excuse, like ‘I’m seeing friends that day’ or ‘I’m chairing an emergency cabinet meeting’. I’m starting to think he’s just not interested.”
Cameron has since hit back at Miliband’s claims, saying he’s got a clear schedule after May 7th and would be happy to do the debate then.
