Mope or Mopey, as friends called him, is described variously as 'a gent', 'the iron chancellor' and 'really a nice bloke once you get to know him'. But most people will remember him as the man emerged seething with resentment after a long spell of incarceration inside 11 Downing Street and immediately sought to settle some scores.
Mope was to embark on the worst spree of destruction ever seen in the British economy, with tragic consequences for many.
Perversely, some sections of society have chosen to pay tribute to him.
