Had some free tickets so went to Wimbledon yesterday. On the train on the way met hoardes of people bound for Henley in all their finery. Posh frocks, blazers etc.
Coming home we met similar hoardes with their posh frocks crumpled and their blazers besmirched. It seemed every carriage on the train from Twyford to Henley had at least two pools of vomit.
People don't understand why I don't like the regatta. Well this is why. Not only do people see it as an excuse to behave disgustingly, it is also an excuse for rival gangs from nearby towns to try and get in as many fights as they can. Also, they probably don't behave like this at home, so why is it ok to come here and let someone else clear up the mess?
Probably the worst example I can remember was when a visiting toff stood on the bar of a pub and pissed into the ice bucket. The police dismissed this as youthful high spirits. But if any local yobbo had done this, he'd have been locked up for the night.
So the bottom line is, avoid Henley if you can. And if you have to come, try not to get involved in a fight. And wear wellies.
