A maverick cop who does things his own way and operates outside the rule-book has enjoyed a relaxing 2 week holiday and hasn't thought at all about the case he was investigating when he was suspended. The maverick cop was suspended because he believed the man his colleagues suspected of a murder was really innocent and that the man was being used as pawn in a high level conspiracy which went all the way to the top of government. The maverick cop believed that someone had got to his boss because the maverick cop knew too much and wanted him off the case.
Following his suspension the maverick cop took a 2 week break in a nice coastal resort where the thought of carrying out his own investigation while suspended never crossed his mind. At no time during his 2 week break did a chance encounter or a breaking news story lead the maverick cop to make a connection with the case he had been investigating and the maverick cop never once felt that he was being watched. Once the maverick cop's holiday was over he felt very refreshed and went back to work to find that the man the Police suspected of the murder had been arrested and made a full confession, making the maverick cop feel a bit foolish.
The first case the maverick cop dealt with on his return to work involved the theft of some bikes in a quiet residential neighbourhood. The maverick cop never did find out who stole the bikes but this seemingly petty crime was actually a very small piece of a massive conspiracy which involved Police top-brass, the media, the nuclear power industry and the highest echelons of government – all of which the maverick cop was blissfully unaware.
