Popular larger than life Lib Dem peer Lord Rennard has agreed to play even larger than life Liberal MP Cyril Smith in a new film. Popular Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg announced the news on his LBC Radio show.
Lord Rennard, known for his acting abilities, welcomed the chance to play Smith. He told Clegg ‘In the annals of political history, this man was brilliant at connecting with young voters, becoming a real hit with young men especially. I too have made it my business to make contact with younger Lib Dems and have succeeded in getting into more young women at the party. I mean getting more young women into the party.’
The film will be more than a celebration of Lib Dem success. It will feature the dark years in which leader Jeremy Thorpe was involved in an alleged relationship with a stable lad, Norman Scott, who turned out to be an unstable lad. Mr Thorpe was found absolutely not guilty of anything at all, with Mr Justice Oaten saying the evidence against him contained filthy smears. Thorpe was driven away from the Old Bailey at speed by a young Chris Huhne, his political career characterised by the media as ‘a dead dog’.
On the Morning Show Clegg denied rumours that Eric Pickles had been offered the role in a gesture of coalition solidarity, but turned it down on catering grounds. Enthusing over Rennard’s casting a bright sounding Clegg said ‘I am delighted these charismatic Liberal big beasts will be connected in this way. As Shakespeare once said ‘Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some thrust their greatness upon others, often at party conferences.’”
