Weeks after the death fetwâ which had been given years ago for his book called “The Satanic Verses” has been updated by Humeyni, Salman Rushdie has made his first comment on the issue: “We have just made a new print of the book and as all publicists know there is no such thing as bad publicity”. Here are the highlights of the responses that Rushdie has given to the questions of the reporters at his book signing, “To be perfectly honest I was worried at first when this fatwa was issued. But than I’ve realized what they say is true when they say there is no such thing as bad publicity. I can go even further by saying it’s a good thing that the updating coincided with the new print of the book. It saved us from the advertisement costs. We are thinking about giving a fair share from the sales of the book to Humeyni. There is no denying that he has made some contributions too. But it’s always the same thing. I think some adjustments must be made while the general concept remains the same. It’s getting old”
Radical Advertisement Campaign
“When I look back I’m saying to myself that probably I couldn’t think of a better advertisement campaign for my book myself. It’s shocking, affective, and sticks in the mind. Everything you can ask for in an advertisement. Plus there is no cost and the entire PR is handed for you by someone else. There’s no doubt it’s one of the longest and most radical advertisement campaign in the history”
Better than a Nobel Prize
Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded annually. So there are a lot of Nobel Prize winning writers around. But Iran doesn’t issue a fatwâ every year. So I'm the only writer with a death fatwâ. It’s undisputable that this makes me more unique than the Nobel winners. What more can you hope for?”
“It’s become a life style”
“In fact I don’t recall how life was without a fetwâ anymore. Although it seems frightening you get used to it troughout the years and it becomes a part of your every day life. It’s like being a convict on a jailbreak. It adds excitement to my life. But the down side is when something happens that makes these kinds of men in Iran mad, they say: “These things are happening because that fatwâ has never been executed in the first place”. Somehow I always get involved”
About statute of limitations
“But on the other hand, I have to underline the fact that there must be a statute of limitations for these fatwâs. All modern legal systems use it. But my fetwâ lingers on! If I would have slept with the daughter of the Iran’s president, by now I shouldn’t be facing any charges. And as I said before, after a while it gets old. The statute of limitations for this could be 30 or 40 years. I don’t know, they rather decide.
“The worst thing about my fetwâ is that it prevents me from going to Iran as a tourist. I never tried but I don’t think I can get a visa. I say I go there in a disguise. No adrenalin junky has experienced anything like this. How about that? It’s definitely the best extreme sport for me”
New move from Iran
According to recent news, Iran authorities who think that their fetwâ is not doing well are working on a new formula. As a part of the efforts for developing new bonds with the West, they are planning to use an old Wild West method so that they will also offer a prize for those who bring him alive.
