Here's my suggestions for policies which Labour (pay attention JOF) or the Lib Dems or even UKIP may want to take up although I doubt the Tories would be interested. Feel free to discuss or add your own:
1. Re-nationalise industries where there is no effective competition.
The Railways: If you live in Yorkshire you can hardly opt to use Arriva Trains Wales because your local carrier is shit.
Utilities. I have changed gas and electricity suppliers several times but the pipes and wires coming into the house are still the same ones. What is the point?
These company executives pay themselves more and more as their customers face higher and higher costs and there is no long term investment.
2. No-one in a publicly funded post (local councils, NHS, education etc) should earn more than 12 times the lowest paid worker for that organisation.
The Swiss rejected this idea recently for private companies but surely it makes sense for publicly funded bodies where executive pay has gone through the roof in a period where major cutbacks to services, redundancies and outsourcing are all taking place. The claim is that this will make them unable to recruit the 'right sort of talent' i.e. greedy bastards who are interested only in themselves and have no sense of public service.
