A Leeds man who commonly used the phrase ‘I could be hit by a bus tomorrow’ to defend his unhealthy lifestyle has died after being hit by the number 42 bus. Friends and colleagues of 51-year old Local Government Officer John Stones were in shock today after his much repeated assertion came true.
'John was a heavy smoker and drinker, was seriously overweight and never did a stroke of exercise’ confirmed a close friend ‘but every time someone told him he should take steps to improve his health he would just laugh and say ‘what’s the point? I could be hit by a bus tomorrow’. I used to say to him ‘well not if you watch where you’re going when you cross the road’ but he would just laugh this off, well he ain’t laughing now’.
The driver of the bus was said to be distraught but is believed to have taken comfort from the fact that the deceased was a fat, lazy, heavy-smoking functioning alcoholic who would probably have keeled over and died soon anyway.
