In what many observers are calling his most outlandish promise to date Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has pledged that an independent Scotland will win the football world cup within 3 years of a Yes vote in this September’s referendum. Speaking at a Sport Scotland event today in Dundee, Salmond told delegates that world footballing domination would be well within the grasp of an independent Scotland ‘If Andy Murray can win Wimbledon why can’t the national team win the world cup? With the confidence given to us by a Yes vote there is no reason why we can’t win the world cup by 2017 at the latest and looking even further forward an oil-rich Scotland will have enough money to buy all the best players for the team’.
However, head of the Better Together campaign Alastair Darling ridiculed Salmond’s latest referendum pledge ‘any fool knows that there isn’t even another world cup until 2018 and of course it doesn’t matter how much cash you have you can’t buy players for your international team’. Mr Salmond responded that this ‘is exactly the type of negativity that we have come to expect from the Better Together campaign, this ‘can’t do’ attitude is what has been holding the country back for years, that and being shit at football’.
