England manager Roy Hodgson has announced that he won’t be travelling to next month’s World Cup in Brazil due to a persistent back complaint. Hodgson told reporters at a press conference this morning ‘I pulled something in my back a couple of weeks ago when I bent down to pick up a Panini World Cup sticker book at the newsagents and it’s been bothering me ever since. My Doctor told me to put my feet up for a while and when I asked him about the World Cup in Brazil he said that sitting on a plane all the way to South America was the worst thing for it and best give it a miss’.
It is understood that Hodgson will give tactical instruction before games and at half time via skype and also by sending text messages during the match to his assistant Ray Lewington. ‘It should be ok’ says Hodgson ‘although some of the games are on quite late and I like to be tucked up in bed by 10.30 at the latest and if I’ve had a G & T then I normally fall asleep in the armchair, let’s face it England games can be pretty dull so I’ll probably record the matches and watch them the next morning. I’m disappointed but it means I can concentrate on filling my Panini sticker book, I got that Luis Suarez the other day, I hadn’t realise he was from Uruguay – he’ll run rings round our boys for sure.’
