Ex Liberal party leader Lord David Steel yesterday put a thirty-year old story to bed by stewing in his own juices.
Explaining his 'rigorous and thorough' investigation into allegations concerning Liberal MP Cyril Smith at the time, Lord Steel said he had confronted the Rochdale behemoth. "I asked him if he'd been kiddy-fiddling and he said 'no'. What more could I do?" said the irate peer, "Except hand him a knighthood eight years later."
Lord Steel added that the Liberal Democrats are to hold a full review of the case, to be headed by their former Chief Executive, Baron Rennard.
