BBC 4 has confirmed that it has taken the option to buy Greenland-Inuit crime series 'Kayi' (Drifting Snow), starting next month. The 52 part story concerns the hunt for a missing teenage girl and follows detective Sofie-Ane Larsen as she painstakingly peels away the complex layers of the mystery by falsely accusing a series of peripheral characters on a weekly basis. BBC 4 Commissioning Editor Gregory Watson said ' BBC 4's purchase of 'Kayi' reinforces our commitment to putting on subtitled foreign stuff for the middle classes on a Saturday night'.
However, the head of Greenland TV, Knud Olsen, told us that he 'couldn’t believe his luck' that someone bought the series. 'Its stultifyingly dull, in Greenland most viewers lost the will to live by episode 4 and by episode 12 there were only 8 people in the whole of the country still watching and we suspect they were just lonely people who had died with the TV still on, probably suicide'.
Gregory Watson defended the BBC's decision to buy the series saying 'we showed a repeat of an old Lovejoy one Saturday night and we nearly had a riot on our hands, I was uninvited to a dinner party the following weekend and our au-pair was spat at in the street. We now realise that some people will watch anything if its got subtitles'. Regular BBC 4 viewer Tamara Matthews confirmed to us 'if it doesn't have subtitles then my hubby and I aren't interested, you can't enjoy a nice Chablis with Parmesan Asparagus and Truffle crisps watching 'The Musketeers'- its just not the same, and you don't get the same feeling of smug superiority watching Saturday Night Takeaway. Hubby has even started watching Match of the Day with the subtitles on'.
So does Knud Olsen think 'Kayi' will develop a cult following in the UK like other northern European crime dramas? 'Who cares, all I know is that its so dull that I'd rather watch Scottish Premier league football, the worst of it is that in the end there wasn't even a crime, it turns out the girl had gone to Sweden to visit Ikea and hadn't told anyone......oops spoiler'.
