Once again the needs of commerce are being put above the existence of an established wetland ecology according to a Green pressure group "Save our heritage". "Just because there are thousands of hectares of prime farmland just below the surface of the water doesn't mean you have to use it" declared group leader Margaret Wilson. "They should just plant rice paddies and have done with it".

Sounds just the kind of daft idea Friends of Green Earthpiece might come up with.
Should explore it further.
You can imagine the Greens saying the Somerset flooding is a result of global warming but then in the next breath condemning plans to drain the flood plains.
I thought that it was an EU requirement to not dredge artificially and to let natural wetlands flood periodically to help wildlife? So no need for a petition, it is already government policy. Er. Sorry, this comment is not funny. Have some stars
