In a surprise announcement the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) today stated that the phone hacking charges facing former News of the World editor, Rebekah Brooks, were being withdrawn. However a CPS spokesman stated that 'the offensive hair colour charges will still be prosecuted.' He went on to say that although Ms Brooks 'was as guilty as hell' of all the phone hacking charges, and that any jury would convict in a heartbeat, the CPS recognized that Ms Brooks would appeal immediately upon conviction and the probability of her having dirt on two out of any three appeal judges meant she was likely to walk free on appeal. 'It just isn't in the public interest,' the spokesman said. 'The hair colour, though, that's a different matter. The woman has shown no regret, no remorse. All it would take is a bottle or two of Clairol and we'd drop those charges. A comb wouldn't go amiss, either,' he added. The case continues at the Old Bailey.
