So, we're all agreed there are plenty of cnuts in politics. This astounding discovery should make the front page.
From what I see and hear, and from the handful of politicians I have met, there are those that do the job for the right reasons and those that use it as a means to their own ends (and, presumably many that keep a foot in both camps). Additionally, some know what they are doing and some are just winging it. These observations apply equally to all political parties. Also to corporate management.
Wouldn't it be nice though, if a realistically elected bunch of reasonably intentioned, reasonably intelligent nice guys worked things out without having to keep to toe-the-party-line on every decision and just do what's right ?
And the best current way of getting to that, as I see it, is to have a hung parliament.
Consider this: in 2010 the population was 62M. Of these, 19M were not eligible to vote, 27M chose not to vote, 16M were in safe seats (ie vote irrelevant), leaving 11M (or fewer) that had a chance to make a difference. Subsequent to their decision, the current government (same argument applies to previous governments) screwed up numerous policies, abandoned others, created others without public consensus.
I'd love to see a team in charge that did stuff because they've been elected to do that and because it's right ?
