There's a hotel in Denmark (I think) that does take electricity from the exercise bikes.

The exercise bikes at the gym in Japan I used to go to gave a print out at the end of the session that had the usual
a) "kms covered"
b) "time"
c) "average speed" etc, but also gave you
d) "calories used"...so far so good...then it told you
e) "how many beers and/or cakes" that was the equivalent of.It was probably to give you a tangible feel for how much flab you'd burnt off, but I just took these print-outs as permission chits and "cashed them in" so to speak in a bar as soon as I left the place.
...so to extend your idea of using gyms to tackle big issues, you could have gyms that tackle not only global warming, but also the obesity problem, whereby people who exceed a certain BMI can only get food/drink using tokens dispensed by exercise machines. Want to eat? Do 30 minutes on the bike and it'll print you out the meal token.
Actually, you could set the calories burnt / food reward ratio according to the degree of obesity...like when you go on a 50p meter for the electric...if you owe them a lot, they put you on a higher rate at first, so you only get say 3kWh for 50p until you've paid them back...then you can go on a better rate...
Well, this has strayed from comedy towards a rather unpleasant / fascist social engineering project, but then comedy and unpleasant / fascist social engineering projects are my two passions in life, so I hope you'll forgive me.
