French President Francois Hollande’s personal and political crisis deepened last night after he was rushed to hospital with symptoms of exhaustion. The Elysée Palace, in a statement last night, said that the President was “feeling tapped out” due to sexual commitments with 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet. In a remarkable string of events, Mr Hollande follows the first lady Valerie Trierweiler, who yesterday was admitted to hospital to seek rest following news of Mr Hollande’s affair with the actress. Reacting to the news, several Conservative opposition members have said that the latest chastening experience for Hollande has “further damaged France’s image abroad.” Former International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn, however, has been a prominent voice among those calling for “privacy for the President and his escapades.” The story has also stoked support for Mr Hollande internationally. In an unexpected show of solidarity on twitter, John Terry, captain of Chelsea and former captain of the English national team, posted: “Thoughts are with Holland(sic) right now. 2 sides to every story. Rest up, bro.” Today Mr Hollande is still recovering in hospital, according to the Le Parisian newspaper, which said he had been prescribed “lots of rest.”
