12 Years a Martian is a 2013 British-American epic historical drama film telling the true story of Ed Milliband's extraordinary rise to political prominence after a little-known event 12 years ago.
In 2002, Edward Samuel Milliband (Rowan Atkinson) is a carefree young man with no political ambitions. He makes his living as a television journalist and Labour Party researcher and speechwriter. One night he is lured by a pair of aliens into a flying saucer which lands near his home. He is transported faster than the speed of light to Mars, where he is subjected to intimate medical procedures. Upon awaking he finds himself with a new personality, being prepared to be landed back on Earth to undertake a mission on behalf of his abductors.
He is sold to cruel slave-driver Gordon Brown (Rab C Nesbitt) who begins verbally and physically harassing him. Concealing his true identity as a Martian, Milliband uses his extra-terrestrial powers to defeat first the cruel Brown and then his own brother David (Steve Coogan).
The film ends with a triumphant Milliband on his way to Buckingham Palace on his first day as newly-elected Prime Minister. He receives a telepathic communication from his former abductors, hovering behind the moon in the giant Martian mothership, congratulating him on completing the first part of his mission, and briefing him on plans for abducting King Charles IV(Gerard Depardieu).
