Hundreds of New Year party-goers launched a furious tirade against the Government over the lackluster fireworks display marking the start of 2014. Merv Smith, 52, a sheep farmer from Rotorua, summed up the feeling of the crowd "I travelled 230km to watch a 15 second firework display. We waited another 20 minutes, but that was it!". Janet Pringle, 19, a wool loom worker from Pukekohe said "We're first almost every year to celebrate New Year and we should have the best show"
A government spokesman, Bryn Grearit, said that the government was introducing plans in 2014 to levy $1 on each of the country's 40 million sheep "We simply cannot afford a display on the same scale as Sydney without increasing taxes. Clearly this would be unpopular with voters, but the sheep won't notice"
