Thanks, writinginbsl, but there seems no sign of the popularity of the apostrophe diminishing. The illiterate, for some reason, never omit them - on the contrary, they always seem desperately anxious to insert as many superflous ones as they can possibly manage.
Perhaps Santa Clau's keeps sending them further supplies.

When you say 'illiterate'for those unable to correctly place an apostrophe, do you also include those that struggle with spelling words correctly?

I refer to those who go to the trouble of carefully, consistently and deliberately - not accidentally - inserting apostrophes where they do not belong, not to careless typos. As you are well aware.
