Northern comic, Johnny Bishford has blamed his single status and a ‘sad’ lack of kids for the failure of his recent UK tour. Poor box office returns and a thrashing from critics has forced the Show’s closure after just two performances.
Speaking from his home in Salford the comic blamed his bachelorhood as the main factor behind the flop.
“Just being a funny Scouser or a Manc isn't good enough these days. Standing up there on stage and not being able to relate to an audience of coupled-off thirtysomethings with 2.2 kids and a back-up force of mother-in-laws is really daunting.” Said the comedian.
“Unlike most stand ups out there on the circuit I haven't got a pool of apathetic teenagers, cute toddlers, sarcastic partners or angry mother-in-laws to draw my humour from.”
Fellow comedian, Sally Millichip has come out in support of her friend and blamed audiences for expecting jokes based purely on family observation.
“Comedians like poor Johnny are restricted to telling jokes about getting drunk, indulging in rampant sex and Sunday league football. It’s a shame he’s not gay otherwise he could always slip in the odd innuendo to the man on the front row to get a laugh.”
Bishford’s agent, Stan Ramsden said, “His chances of doing Live at the Apollo now depend on him finding a bird and getting her up the duff as soon as possible, otherwise the bastard’s off my books.”
It is understood that Sally Millichip is offering support to Johnny during this difficult time. “It’s sad to see him down in the dumps but I'll help him as much as I can. If he was a single woman comedian at least he could crack jokes about his fanny.”
