A Vatican official has apologised to large crowds gathered in St.Peter’s Square saying the Pope had forgotten it was Christmas and had gone off hill walking in Umbria
The Pope had muttered something about ‘everybody being on holiday at this time of year’ and didn’t think Catholics around the world would be feeling in a particularly religious mood and said it would be the perfect time for him to get away for a few days and do a spot of hill walking.
It was left to Fransiscan Jose Rodriguez to address the huge crowd and explain about the papal gaff saying it was Pope Francis first Christmas as head of the Catholic church and the oversight was perfectly understandable under the circumstances.
Rodriguez said as the Pope was such a humble man who shunned the trappings of modern life he had no mobile phone or internet access and it was proving impossible to contact him.
‘The Pope said he was going to spend some time alone in the hills... just walking, following the stars and reading his bible. He was going to use the break for contemplation and to reflect on the true meaning of Christianity’ explained Rodriguez ‘he said he wouldn’t be back until the new year when all the fuss had died down....he’s going to be furious when he starts reading The New Testament and gets to the bit about baby Jesus’.
