I like to immerse myself in the local culture when I go to away games and had the dubious pleasure at the weekend of being introduced to the delight that is Middlesbrough's gastronomic speciality - the 'full parmo'. It seems that it is unique to Middlesbrough as colleagues who've lived in Newcastle and Sunderland had never heard of it. Here's a picture of one although mine looked less appetising:
It comprises a kind of chicken burger about the size of a frisbee wrapped in breadcrumbs and deep-fried then topped with half a pint of thick bechamel-style sauce, a mound of grated coloured cheddar and a ladle or two of garlic mayonnaise. In case that doesn't contain enough calories or cholesterol for you, it is served with enough chips to fill the rest of the pizza box.
There is a smaller version available, known as a 'Lady Parmo'.
Can there possibly be a less healthy local speciality?
