Nick Clegg's speech tomorrow will confirm that anyone with a plasma TV under 37 inches is "marginal breadline"
In an attempt to remove a million people from this poverty line his speech reads “The minority of the country with black and white portables are to be given the maximum grant to bring them up to the expect 50" LED back-lit screen "worthy of a society such as this"
We, as a government cannot stand by while 37" and smaller TVs dominate family life. We are already seeing an increase in adult myopia and worsening cases of child pixel deprivation, equivalent to numbers in developing countries. Britain, as a technology leader must ensure it is not just the 5% of the population who can afford wide-screen theatre surround sound. Although we cannot confirm the full entitlement to HD on benefits yet, we must secure at least 44" as a bare minimum, no matter what the cost. A rising scale of acceptable minimums based on resolution and screen size will be in place by August 2011."
We took this on to the streets to gauge the reaction. Bog Hughes knows what it is like to sffer "my boy is victimised at school, the other kids take the piss out of him badly. We don’t want to be labelled "pixelly challenged" we just want the government to recognise that we are in this situation through no fault of our own"
Will this policy bear fruit? Who knows, the blanket treatment of A&E patients with Sky Plus boxes didn’t give Clegg the results he wanted so let us see how well this does
