Following news that the government plans to reduce the number of personnel serving in the regular armed forces and replace these soldiers with reservists, the Ministry of Defence has issued conscription notices for men under the age of 50.
To meet the numbers required to cover troop shortfalls, the notices will be sent to all men under the age of 50 who did not attend Oxford or Cambridge (excluding Girton College). Members of the public in so called “critical function” jobs will not be required to join the services – with the current list of these roles including Merchant Banker, Stockbroker, Futures Trader, CEO and Members of Parliament.
The initial notices will also be assigned geographically, with potential service personnel close to the main garrisons recruited in the first instance. Therefore all men north of Birmingham should expect their call up notices within the next four to seven days.
In a statement, the MoD said this decision had not been taken lightly and was down to the ineffectiveness of their last recruitment campaign, where David Cameron channelled the great Lord Kitchener with a simple poster saying “Your Country Needs YOU – to give up one weekend per month and sit in a cold Yorkshire field looking at Tanks.”
