The coalition government is to give everyone in the UK a free jumper this winter in an attempt to beat Labour over rising energy costs.
George Osborne said that the free jumper policy will also create thousands of knitting jobs as well as keep everyone warm.
'Sixty-three million jumpers is a lot of jumpers,' said a Treasury spokeswoman.
The heat from millions of active knitting needles will help to warm homes, said a spokesman for Communities Secretary Eric Pickles.
Iain Duncan Smith warned that 'jumper scroungers' might try and get more than one jumper.
But Labour immediately condemned the plan.
It's ridiculous,' said a Labour Party spokesman. 'When we first heard of it, we were in stitches'.
