In other news: nuclear meltdown, plague, dalek invasion - all in North of England and therefore not particularly newsworthy.

Yup. The Universe revolves around London. I know that must be true - I've seen it on TV.

BBC coverage hilarious - reporter in Brighton describing the chairs on the ferris wheel rocking "quite violently". Another report described tin cans being blown past Broadcasting House. It's a strange mentality (1) if it happens in / near London it's extra-important (2) we've decided this is going to be a big story, so we're going to give it maximum airtime even if there's nothing much to say.
Apologies - none of that was amusing

<breaking protocol to re-post chatroom jibber>
Sky news keeps showing one of the Gatwick buses bravely fording a puddle, and the best one is of a chap down at a marina somewhere reporting that many boats have water in them and <pans camera to the water surface, where the wind is rippling it a bit>
"Just look at the waves on the water here, and there is a swan over there fighting against the wind"I kid you not.

I think you'll find that swan was going for his morning paddle, and that a swift current is somewhat more significant than the drag factor of a little wind in ones feathers.
