Thousands of armchairs are being mistreated in care homes across the UK, according to an undercover report by upholstery inspectors.
The report says that the image of the care home armchair as seen on television news programmes, gives the false impression that the chairs are in a healthy condition and are uncomplainingly supporting grateful sleeping old people.
But the undercover findings reveal a twilight world of faded armchairs held together with Sellotape, with broken legs and arms, and chairs that hadn't had a shampoo or seen a vacuum cleaner for years. Some were said to be on their last legs after giving years of service.
'It's heartbreaking to see such neglect,' said one upholstery expert. 'It knocks the stuffing right out of you.'
