Solo living is the preferred life-style of people no one else would contemplate living with for a moment, according to a Social Trends report which also says that one third of people in the UK live alone.
'I love being a singleton,' said Margie Murgatroyd, 56, who habitually likes to bathe in porridge and has garlic on toast for breakfast. 'I've had six husbands and I've never been happier as I am now.'
'What I like about being by myself,' said Arthur Schofield, 62, 'is that I can do what I like, when I like, without worrying about anyone else when, for example, I sob my heart out at Christmas. It's bloody great is independent living and if I knew anyone else I'd recommend it to them.'
