Length of a piece of string settled as 56cm

Typical bloody EU bureaucrats from Brussels poking their noses in.
Why can't we have proper Imperial pieces of string? They worked fine for my grandfather. Even the red tape we are all tied up in is in cm now. Bloody foreigners.
And why should we be forced to use standrd length pieces of string anyway? Random, unpredictable length is on of the charms of string. I have a cupboard full of pieces of string and they are all in inches, so there. Come and get me, Fritz, Pierre or Luigi - you'll have to climb over my dead body if you want to alter the length of my pieces of string, especially if you want to make them metric. My forefathers didn't risk their lives, up to their necks in muck and bullets, fighting Naploleon and William the Conqueror, just to have our string standardised.
