Qatar has been selected to hold the prestigious World Sauna championships in 2020, after the governing body SIFA ruled it was acceptable that this should be a male only event. The tiny Arab state managed to convince Norway, which has more saunas per head than any other country, that hosting the event in 45 degree temperatures would be more sustainable. "We wouldn't have to heat the little wooden boxes at all," said a source.
But Qatar is under widespread pressure to mount all women sauna events. Controversially, though, SIFA has sided with Qatar, citing "cultural differences".
SIFA president Stepp Hotter told reporters "I know this is a controversial decision, but as we say in the competitive Sauna business, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen I have just had installed in my Zurich home at a cost of €179,000"
