Nick Clegg has spoken out about the discrepancies between what he says and does. He has explained that the contradictions inherent in his persona are proof, not of hypocrisy or ineptitude, but that he is a deeply intriguing man.
'The thing you've got to understand about me,' he told journalists, 'is this: I'm fascinating. I say one thing and do another, I feel one way and then act another. I'm a fascinating enigma. One only has to skim the canon of English literature to see that all interesting characters are conflicted and confused. And if you need proof I'm just as, if not, ahem, more conflicted than that, I'm not even sure I mean what I'm saying right now! How about that! That's got to be proof it's true! I'm not even sure I want people to vote for me. Which is surely proof that you should.'
