Mariella Frostrup will invite contestants from the public to a new BBC Radio 4 panel show to make a difficult choice. They have either to make love to her or join her in the boxing ring for two one minute rounds. hence the title, sex or box. A celebrity panel led by Barry Cryer, listening in a separate studio, will have thirty seconds to guess which choice the contestant has made, based on what they hear. Afterwards, contestants have to say whether they regretted their choice, or would do it all over again. Ms Frostrup has been in "in intensive training" in the run up to the show
"Yes it's edgey, yes it's controversial, yes it's modern," said Radio 4 controller Gwynedd Smythe. But she denied accusations that it was sensationalist, pointing to the new trend for women's boxing and Ms Frostrup's track record as agony aunt."
"Mariella really divides people. Some find her overwhelmingly attractive, others incredibly irritating. Some really do want to seduce her, while others genuinely want to make repeated attacks with both gloves to her solar plexus or jawline rendering her unconscious and incapable of further broadcasting. In either case, protective devices will be worn and BBC health and safety executives will be on hand. They have learned valuable lessons from watching old It's a Knockout tapes.
"Whichever option the contestant takes, we can guarantee Mariella will give as good as she gets. She is an amazingly sexy woman who is an accomplished boxer to boot. The show touches upon the controversy around sex and violence in an adult way. And because it's radio, you only hear what's going on, although we are thinking about having John Motson in the commentary box."
