Sixty-five years after Aneurin Bevan described Tories as 'lower than vermin', taxonomists have confirmed that the Labour politician's classification is correct.
The news may come as an embarrassment to the Tories as they assemble for their party conference in Manchester.
'Nye Bevan's 1948 classification was controversial at the time,' said Dr Frank Johnson of Cardiff University,'but after a careful investigation of Tory behaviour, we have concluded it was substantially correct. We would place the average Tory animal below Rattus.'
But Dr Johnson pointed out that the classification was unfair to some vermin.
'For example, we don't think it at all likely that most vermin would have been so low as to have produced the bedroom tax,' he said.
