Doctors originally thought it was a killer brain bug attack.
Most gnats bite or annoy humans. Midges are also sometimes called gnats. In North America the name is also applied to the blackfly, fruit fly, and other small flies that hover about the eyes of humans and other animals.
Male gnats often assemble in large mating swarms or ghosts, particularly at dusk.
Until recently, scientists were puzzled about the purpose of gnats. Then they realised gnats pollinate flowers and are also an important food source for birds, bats and larger insects.
All scientists have to do now is to work out the purpose of flowers, birds, bats, larger insects and humans.
The BBC today commissioned a one hour high-definition fly-on the-wall gnat documentary spectacular, to be narrated by top voice-over artiste and national treasure Stephen Fry, host of the well-known show QI, which stands for Pretentious Prats and Unfunny Sycophants Wasting Licence Payers’ Money When They Could Better Fill The Airtime With Keith Lemon.
“That is so deliciously funny my sweet” gushed Stephen “I have been pleading with my good showbiz pal Keith Lemon for yearsy wearsy to let me on Celebrity Juice as I do love northern bawdy humour so much I can’t tell you darling. My minge goes all moisty woisty at the very thought of it.”
