The shadow Home Secretary has created a storm by calling for a public debate on men wearing bow ties.
Yvette Cooper said “This item of attire betrays a sense of superiority and wealth by the wearer, aimed at making others feel uncomfortable. Society would be a more equal place if this invidious neckwear was banned”.
Unions backed the proposal, saying “Bow ties make eye contact difficult – who can look a buffoon in the eye when confronted with a yellow and green spotted monstrosity, often provokingly at eye level?”
The Royal College of Surgeons fought back, decrying the proposal as yet another attack on health professionals. “How will people know we’re important if we can’t wear this badge of honour?” asked one surgeon who asked not to be named.
A representative of the clown community urged caution. “We wear the bow tie to invite laughs”, he explained. “We are already poking fun at it as a fashion choice. We urge the party to consider making clowns an exception to this proposal”.
