I think it worthy of mention that our very own Babs (stage name, Neal Doran) is a published author today. His debut novel, Dan Taylor is Giving Up on Women is out and can be bought with money here.

This is important for you to know for two reasons. 1) I hope that lots of people will support a member of our lovely community and 2) just goes to show that any old dick-head can do it.

    Congrats Babs. xxx

I second that. I started reading it this morning and it's a real page turner. Well it's not, because it's on my Kindle. But it is good.

I haven’t read it but I have read other books and I enjoyed them, so I assume this will be good too.

Well-written and articulate praise from JoF; you can tell that he’s an author.

Well done Mr Doran. I’m sure your success will inspire many other biscuits to fail in your footsteps.

Er, Zadok - you can turn the pages on a Kindle. He wrote more than one. Which is more than he's done here for a while *boom tish*

Does it come in old-fashioned page turning paper form as well as Kindle?
On Amazon it only come digitally.
At least it gave me the opportunity to buy the Boothill Foot Tappers CD I've been promising myself for ages.

Thank you all, especially Vince, for calling me a dickhead. She wouldn't have been so nice if she thought I was going to see it.

And I'm with you Zadok, it's more a page flicking than a page turning on a Kindle, isn't it.

Gerontius, it's digital-only at the minute, but can be used with all sorts of digital devices and phones and stuff and not just the Kindle. I can text it to anyone really keen (there is a £50 charge to unsubscribe once I start though...). If anyone's not a fan of Amazon, and would like to support local bookshops as well as 21st century reading mores you can get it from Hive which is some kind of delightfully hippy bricks/clicks book commune. I can't guarantee free love, mind:

    http://www.hive.co.uk/ebook/dan-taylor-is-giving-up-on-women/18003413/

Finally, yes, you can give it stars when you're done, so all those years of practice can be put into action. And also, it's likely none of the money will be going to charity, so we can avoid that whole fund-raising debate that was going on recently...

This has been a paid* commercial presentation.

    *it's in the post.

    Bar Bar Bar, Barbara Doran

    Congratulations!

I await the sequels 'I'm giving up on bisexuality' and 'Horses for courses'

Excellent stuff to get a book published and released onto the information superhighway.

Congrats, Neal, and on a related note, I believe that copies of 'Civil War, Interregnum & Restoration in Gloucestershire, 1640-1672' are still available online.

    Oxy, let's be honest here.
You know there are copies available, and should anyone order one, you'll dash out to your garden shed, chuck the old gardening anorak, three broken plant pots, the trowel you made in metal work and half a toastie off the top of the pile, chase away several spiders, and loving hold one of the remaining copies in your hands before sticking it in a large, padded envelope and sending it off to its new home.

Babs, congrats. You done well my son, and just as soon as the old student loan comes through I shall purchase a copy from iBooks. (I have no moral objection to the shady workings of Apple, Amazon or their ilk. Whatever is cheapest wins.)

Be prepared for my review on Amazon.

Oxy, if I ever see 'People who bought Dan Taylor Is Giving Up On Women also bought: Civil War, Interregnum & Restoration in Gloucestershire, 1640-1672, Mastermind Contestants Go Wild, and The Collected 70s Penthouse, I'll know you've finally cracked and bought a copy.

Thanks Jen -- that's the trouble with digital books, students can't so easily shoplift them.

And hello again everyone else (except Sheldon, he can fuck right off).

Surely it's not about the money?

It should be entirely about the creativity, they self-expression, the sheer joy in presenting your imaginings to the greater world?

    You power-hungry, selfish bastard.

I applaud all writers who actually produce books, leaving the rest of us who have great ideas for books but never get round to it to seethe in admiration.

The 'people who liked this book also bought' seems to have a preponderance of chick-lit.

How are we defining an author's genre these days?

Mine is via iTunes Id, so wouldn't skew anything.

Especially as I'm not prone to purchasing anything with the word 'chick' associated with it.
Unless 'chick' is followed by 'en'.

Duke, I'm pretty much classed as chick-lit and I find it strangely liberating. Why in books romantic comedy is seen as women-only when in movies or sit-coms or whatever it's something for everybody I don't know, and probably best not to get me started... (Also here's a coded message for you -- put it in a category of C Boy books)

Thanks Jeni, there's a money back satisfaction guarantee. You just need to pop your iPad in the post and I'll send a fiver back, less postage and packing.

Hi Ronseal, you know how it is, a military court sends you away for a crime you didn't commit, you escape into the LA underground but then no-one bothers to even try and find you. Bastards.

Aw shucks, well if we're 'fessing up. I have viewed Love Actually with a reasonable amount of enjoyment and I did, once, in an unguarded moment, sing along to Mamma Mia (though as could be discerned from many of the notes, I omitted to inhale).

C Boy books seemed to extend to copies of Shoot magazine, a couple of pretentious tortured souls discussing Sylvia Plath, and then later on an altogether different sort of Shoot Magazine, typically liberated from a rather liberal father's wardrobe stash by an enterprising individual.
