"Mostly those on town councils are public-spirited types, who want to give something back as well as being on an ego trip in some cases. They are unpaid, sit in boring meetings for a couple of evenings a week and get nothing for their pains but online grief. I don't know why they'd want to do it, but it's just as well they do."
Well said Oxbridge. I also agree with sinnick.
That is a realistic, fair and honest description of the situatiuon in most cases. Such comments clearly have no place in NewsBiscuit however where it is compulsory to conform to the tedious, cycnical cliche of asserting that everyone in public office is invariably either corrupt or on an ego trip - or both.
Unfortunatley such predicatble, unversal and undiscriminating cynicism reduces the impact of satirical comment on the behaviour of those politicians who really are complete twats or ego-centric crooks.

In this case, where were the council officers - i.e., the professional, qualified, paid planning staff? Did they not explain to the ego-struck elected members what the law was? If they didn't know, why haven't they been reprimanded, disciplined or sacked for professional incompetence?
