I think that he has been busy cycling too much. I hope that this is one of the funnier 'just giving' pages http://www.justgiving.com/Michael-Stradling

Why not do something useful to raise money. Either that or give a % of your salary.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Don't have a salary.
Considered doing a sponsored online ironic commentary on everything, but that is so 2011.

Wow Fernando, welcome back. Love the intermittent blog. What you been up to?

Cycling

I thought you were a lawyer. If you don't call what you rake in a salary what's it called then?

Fees
Posted 7 years ago # -
Well I see you have £10 already. How far does that get you?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Only slightly beyond the monosyllabic
Posted 7 years ago # -
There you go, should get you a second syllable. Good luck!

Solicitors used to, and possibly still do, a charitable thing to do with the making of wills, to show they weren't all total bastards all of the time. Perhaps you should do something similar in your particular field of expertise. Be a damn sight more useful than going on a pleasurable bike ride.

Thanks Al- greatly appreciated.
AAArkwright, I feel you anger. It's ok. I deal with resentment, bitterness and criminality all the time.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I don't feel any anger here Ferna...etc. I'm all for giving money to charity, after checking it's not all going to those who are running it. However, I tend to suspect that appeals like the one you've presented are more for the personal gratification of the participant rather than the actual charity concerned. If you want a sense of achievement by walking the Great Wall of China, the Inca Trail, climbing Everest or biking round your back garden that's great. Go for it. However, no one now can do any of these useless but fulfilling activities if they're not also raising money for a charity.
Tell me what useful purpose your bike ride is achieving and think of what you could be doing to really help the charity you're supporting.Posted 7 years ago # -
What do you suggest he does - open heart surgery at the weekends?
I am struggling with your logic here a little AAA, how does he do something "to really help the charity you're supporting", short of actually raising money for it. Go into the office to man the 'phones to raise money by suggesting people take part in cycle rides and marathons to raise money - oh hold on a second that won't work will it? Isn't the purpose of the charity to raise money to give to heart related activities?
I think you'd better think it over again.

I think I already gave one example as to what he can do, read it again Al. As a scientist it's excusable that you lack a bit of imagination for alternatives. He could clear his local high st of litter, do the shopping for several old folk, have a look for organisations looking for volunteers; there're always out there. Whatever it is will be more beneficial to society.
I don't mind the bloke doing what he's doing but he's doing what he wants to do so why does he also need the added extra of a charity donation. If he was cleaning out the sewers of the local orphanage I might donate a couple of quid. The Taliban fund for failed suicide bombers will have to go hungry for a couple of weeksI think you'd better think it over again.
Posted 7 years ago # -
And how, exactly, is he going to help secure better heart surgery?
No - you think it over again.
Scientists - well known for a lack of imagination. Stunning.
Posted 7 years ago # -
The scientist comment was meant to be a joke but your reaction says it all really.
Lets just agree to disagree. I'll keep on giving to the charities I've all ready picked and you give your money to cyclists.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Well, I actually gave the money to the charity, but let's not split hairs, eh?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Poles apart on this but I know not on everything. Enjoyed the chat.

You can't talk in here, this is the Chat Room! No hard peelings.

The thing is, I usually don't bother raising money. It's just that the organisers suggested raising money.
Perhaps I need to be more severe in my plans, and involve flagellation and being literally murdered halfway through the ride before my actions accord with hardcore right wing logical reductionism.
Still, maybe there is the germ of sub in here, somewhere...

"Charity bike rider no more than a self pubcyclist"?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Fernando you're an arsehole
Posted 7 years ago # -
I think what AAA is getting at, is the charity would benefit more if fernandomando didn't go on a bike ride, and instead stayed at work for that day and donated his fees to it. Forgive me if I got that wrong.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Man stops halfway through vodka drinkathon in aid of street-cleaning charity to post in chatroom.....
Posted 7 years ago # -
And where does the "you're an arsehole" bit fit into that train of thought?
Posted 7 years ago # -
AAArkwright.
Dear oh dear.
I thought you were going to say 'You're an AAArsehole'.
It would have been funnier.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Wow! Bilious.
On the one hand, I did take umbrage at being asked to sponsor someone to walk the Great Wall of China (along the lines of, I don't mind sponsoring you to walk a considerable distance for charity, but that could just as easily be from here to Plymouth, without me having to pay towards your holiday of a lifetime).
Conversely, I shared in the organisation of a charity CPD event that raised £10k, but also raised the profile of my business. Didn't feel bad afterwards...felt rather good in fact.
Essentially- Fernando-bored-now is putting effort in for a good cause. The fees he could command in his professional life are irrelevant. Good effort, have some pennies.

I kind of see what AAArkwright is saying, but don't necessarily agree in this case. It is annoying when people say 'I am doing a parachute jump for charity, but need to raise £400 minimum to cover the cost'. What they mean is 'I want you to pay for me to do a parachute jump, and what's left can go to charity.'
