A community dance had to be called off last night in the small town of Barrow, Alaska, after the heating system failed.
So severe was the outside temperature that within minutes of the failure, the organist was unable to pull the stops out and many in the audience, dressed for revelling and a warm reception, had to be treated at the local medical centre for frostbite. Several allegedly had to have toes amputated.
The mayor said in a statement this morning that he hoped the dance could go ahead tonight but with special conditions.
Locals report that a notice outside the community hall states "Management Regrets: organ iced, banned soft shoers".
