The Met Police has defended its use of HTT (honey trap for trolls) the first automated online victim designed to draw the collective stings of the world's cyberpaths.
HTT was sent out onto the Internet, designed to look like the Twitter account of a 14 year old multi talented girl. The combination of being vulnerable, innocent and good at a variety of things has been identified by forensic psychologists as the perfect profile of a potential troll victim. "This is like a red rag to a troll. She's clever, she's hot, she's everything they're not," said a scientist who designed the honey trap. "No troll would be able to pass up a chance to say something nasty. It would be like trying not to strangle a kitten."
In just 24 hours, the Met recorded 480 vindictive tweeters, including some surprising names. This list included high court judges, MPs and professional footballers, as expected, but it also included some real surprises such as game show hosts, stand up comedians and professional celebrities.
