Former University Challenge host and Newcastle United footballer Bamber Gascoigne has been fined £1,000 for assaulting a railway security guard and being drunk and disorderly.
Appearing before magistrates in Stevenage, he admitted attacking the guard at the Hertfordshire town's railway station on 4 July.
The Court heard that Gascoigne yelled "How's this for a starter for ten?" as he attempted to strangle the railway worker.
Assault charges relating to his ex-wife, Sheryl, were withdrawn.
When asked for a comment, his successor on the show, Jeremy Paxman said, "You blithering idiot, you've got Bamber Gascoigne mixed up with Paul Gascoigne - now leave me alone to get on with working on the next series of Top Gear."
