A flurry of significant news events around the world are thought to herald the arrival of the eagerly awaited comet ISON c/2012 S1, due to light up the night skies around November 2013.
History is liberally sprinkled with occasions where significant or unusual events are
immediately followed by a comet blazing a trail across the sky, sometimes even visible in daylight, and this has often been assumed to be some kind of cryptic message from space or from a deity.
In the UK, a future king has been born into the royal family, and Stuart Hall's sentence for kiddy-fiddling has been extended. In Italy, Silvio Berlusconi has been found guilty of something. Bernie Ecclestone is in imminent danger of losing his iron grip on formula one. In Zimbabwe, a Robert Mugabe election setpiece took place peacefully. Some even think that all of the 'Arab spring' events of the last few years have been leading up to this event, indicating that a comet was on the way.
The only significant event thought *not* to be linked to the coming comet is the complete absence of a punchline.
(Aagh! I need help please!)
