The NHS 111 service is to be restricted to people who are "fit as fiddles". A government spokesman explained that; "Ill people clog up the system and really bring down the people in the call centre with their constant winging. By using a simple questionnaire at the start of the call - 'are you ill? If so, hang up now and call someone who cares.' - staff morale has soared and we can finally run at a profit; it's a win-win scenario."

Brilliant - all it took was a little lateral thinking, instead of the 'run away' approach they the operators have taken. I bet they feel pretty silly now!
NHS Direct for the healthy will have enough time-per-caller that they can extend the offering to hand out useful prevention advice as well : "Stay healthy : Carry on eating the stuff that you eat already, but not too much of it." ; "Keep up the payments to your private healthcare provider." etc
